History

The Stuart-Mosby Historical Society has established a memorial fund in memory of Mrs. Adele H. Mitchell, who founded the Society in 1983. Based on her dedication to the memories and deeds of General J.E.B. Stuart, CSA, and Colonel John S. Mosby, CSA, the Adele H. Mitchell Memorial Fund has been maintained and granted in her memory since her death on May 18, 1997.  Mrs. Mitchell’s guiding passion in life was to see young people learn the true history of the United States.  Particularly, she wanted students to learn the history of the period of the War Between the States, together with the unique position and prominence of the Confederate States of America and the contributions, both political and military, of the great men associated with the Confederacy.  The fund has been used to grant scholarships and also for preservation of Stuart and Mosby related sites.  All contributions to the memorial fund are tax deductible.

Requirements & Qualifications for a Scholarship

The scholarship may be granted to a high school or college student who has evidenced a genuine interest in the history of the United States and the South, and who plans to pursue the study of history through the college level.  The frequency and amount of the scholarship will be determined by the Board of Directors of the Society dependent upon the qualifications of and the number of applicants.  Scholarships may be awarded annually.

  1. The applicant must be a high school senior or a student enrolled full time in a four year college bachelor’s degree program.

  2. The student should be majoring in or planning to major in history or a related field.  An emphasis on American history or the history of the War Between the States is considered to be a strong factor in awarding the scholarship.

  3. An essay of at least 1,500 words written on the character and accomplishments of General J.E.B. Stuart or Colonel John S. Mosby may be required to be submitted to the Stuart-Mosby Historical Society.  This essay should include the reason the applicant views this person as a positive role model.

  4. The essay and a biography of the applicant, along with certification of enrollment as described in the first requirement above, may be submitted to a member of the Society or mailed to the newsletter editor.

  5. Final candidates for the award may be asked to attend a meeting of the scholarship committee for an interview.
